'Heroes at Home' assists veterans
Sunday, April 11, 2010 By MICHAEL McAULIFFE mmcauliffe@repub.com
SPRINGFIELD - Dozens of volunteers are ready to work May 12 on a Maple Court building where homeless veterans can stay while they get back on their feet.
Rebuilding Together Springfield, working with a $50,000 grant from the Sears Holdings Corp. through the "Heroes at Home" program, is behind the effort that will include yard cleanup, interior and exterior painting, replacing flooring and fencing, and installing a new roof and energy-efficient appliances.
Colleen S. Loveless, executive director of Rebuilding Together Springfield, said most of the work will be done from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 12. The building, at 52 Maple Court, is a 12-room house that is a transitional housing facility of the Western Massachusetts Bilingual Veterans Outreach Center.
Loveless said those she has called for help have responded with enthusiasm.
"I haven't had anybody say 'No' to me," she said.
Loveless said some things are still needed, however, including shingles, flooring and carpet, and energy-efficient light bulbs.
Peter Pan Bus Lines will provide a bus for shuttling volunteers from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the work site, and there will also be a blood drive held and donations of nonperishable food will be accepted and given to Open Pantry Community Services.
"Everything's staying in the Springfield community," Loveless said.
